This solid mahogany writing table was bequeathed to Broadgreen House by Isabella Kain in 1993, on behalf of her husband Leonard Bond Kain. The table was first purchased by the family in 1855.

This longcase clock made by the first clockmaker in a family of British clockmakers. The inscription on the clock indicates it was made by William Bothamley of Kirton, Lincolnshire. As William moved from Kirton to Spalding (also in Lincolnshire) in 1757, that means this clock was made prior to 1757.

The oak longcase cabinet is decorated with carved oak leaves, acorns and the English rose. The brass dial with a moving bird refers to the proverb tempus fugit, or time flys. The clock was bequeathed by Clarence Herbert from Nelson in 1990.

The study features this beautiful tōtara knot writing desk. On the desk you’ll find a quill and ink, and a stationery organiser. Some of the books in the study are from Thomas Marsden’s collection, others are from Bishop Suter’s collection.

This firescreen features the coat of arms of Magdalene College, Oxford, England. Magdalene was founded in 1458 by the Bishop of Winchester and is one of the major older colleges of Oxford University. Donated to Broadgreen House by Mrs P. Fulford.

Also known as the 'Swift Machine', the mangle was an essential tool used for washing clothes and linen. It was used for both wringing water from the washing as well for pressing, or mangling. For wringing, people were advised to "use the rollers at the ends as well as the middle, and always avoid lumps or uneven folding". For mangling, they were instructed to "wipe down the rollers well with a dry cloth, place the mangle board in front of the machine, and after folding the clothes with all the buttons turned inside pass them through the rollers as required. If they are not sufficiently pressed, the operation should be repeated."

The umbrella stand is made with pieces of broken china, such as cups, saucers, plates and ornaments which have been stuck onto a Victorian field pipe with plaster of paris. It was donated by Mrs Haycock (nee Palmer). The umbrella stand was originally given to Mrs Haycock’s mother by a Mrs Crabtree.

The pewter teapot has seen better days – it probably had a fair amount of use! It has a dark grey patina with rose, floral and emblematic patterns and indentation.

The teapot was donated by Yvonne Hunt, who purchased it from the Harley estate. The Harley family lived in what is now known as Fifeshire House in Trafalgar Square Nelson. The Harleys were well respected local brewers, with Harleys Ale, made at their Raglan Brewery, gaining international recognition.

This cheese press sits on cast iron framed legs. It would have been used in the cheese-making process to press and drain whey from the curds, and then press the resulting cheese into rounds. There is a brass gauge that shows the pressure being applied, which can be adjusted by turning the top handle.

The cheese press was brought to New Zealand by the Malcolm family in 1842. It was donated to Broadgreen House by descendant Arthur Malcolm.
